Noted architect and author Charles Durrett introduced the concept of cohousing to the United States from its success in Denmark. As a leader in sustainable, green design, he designs projects that are space-efficient, easy to maintain, and cost-effective. His firm’s primary concern is people, their environment, and the quality of their lives.
His work has received considerable national recognition, and his socially relevant projects have won numerous awards, including the United Nations’ Human Habitat Award.
He is also the author of the groundbreaking book, Senior Cohousing: A Community Approach to Independent Living – The Handbook (TenSpeed Press).
A licensed architect, Kathryn McCamant founded McCamant & Durrett Architects and The Cohousing Company with her husband, Charles Durrett, in 1987. The firm, with offices in Berkeley and Nevada City, California, specializes in sustainable design, cohousing, affordable housing, urban planning, and childcare facilities.
In 2006, she founded CoHousing Partners with Jim Leach, a cohousing development company, of which she is now president. CP is currently working on projects in Fresno and Grass Valley, California. She sat on the Coho/US Board for six years from its initial founding.
The couple live in the Nevada City Cohousing Community. Previously, they lived for 12 years at Doyle Street Cohousing in Emeryville, California. Their 18-year-old daughter grew up in these two communities.
