A 2008 Map of Where Cohousing Communities Exist
The number of cohousing communities is increasing dramatically. This map is based on the data from a recent census conducted by Betsy Morris, Ph.D., Coho/U.S.'s research director. As shown, built cohousing communities in the U.S. number 113 at mid-year. (Continued below the map.)

The groups that are "in process," namely forming groups – with and without a site – now number 111, although six are soon to be completed and will bump the total of built communities to 119. The state totals that have communities under construction are shown with an asterick. Specifically, those groups are:
- California: Fresno Cohousing (a.k.a. La Querencia) in Fresno, and Wolf Creek Commons in Grass Valley
- Massachusetts: Camelot Cohousing and Mosaic Cohousing, sister communities in Berlin
- Missouri: Metro Cohousing in St. Louis
- Vermont: Putney Commons Cohousing in Putney
Other results of that census, including the material presented at the 2008 Cohousing Conference in Boston, can be found in the Research Topic Room. (Registration as a member is required, although membership is free.) The material offers other interesting graphical representations of the growth of cohousing in the U.S.
This map is an update of the 2007 one which can be seen here.
Locations and other details about the specific built and forming communities behind these numbers can be found in our Directory. Search by the state you're interested in.
