Cohousing Directory - Community View
• Move-in date mid- to late 2009
• 5-story urban infill site, up to 33 units, parking and retail space, just north of the Claremont and Telegraph intersection (near 51st St.) in North Oakland's thriving Temescal District.
• Near excellent public transportation (bus, BART and, by move-in, bus rapid transit, as well as City CarShare), schools, all major freeways, the Rockridge and Temescal shopping districts, a block away from a new year-round farmer's market, and midway between downtown Oakland and downtown Berkeley.
• Developed as a collaborative effort between a successful local development team and a small but growing cohousing group, which has begun buying the land and right to build. The group will start developing the site upon receiving use permits and close of escrow in 2007.
• Lead architects are Tom Dolan of Thomas Dolan Architecture and Chuck Durrett of McCamant & Durrett Architects.
• Energy-efficient, sustainable design and building practices; working to develop an internal affordability fund.
• Unit sizes to be determined by the group in collaboration with architects, probably ranging from studios to 3-4 bedrooms with generous common areas for dining & meeting, guest facilities, outdoor patios, shared laundry, children's play areas, and . . .
• We are singles, couples, and child-raising families of different ages and incomes, committed to collaboration, diversity, good communication, consensus decision-making, and respect: for each other, for the earth, and for all who live on it.
• This is the first new East Bay cohousing community in more than seven years, and the third for North Oakland's Temescal District.
