We are a group of Bay area residents who are creating a Cohousing Community at 445 Calderon Ave in Mountain View, CA (in the center of Silicon Valley, San Francisco Bay Area). The site is approximately 1 level acre, 6 blocks from Castro St and downtown amenities (restaurants and sidewalk cafes, bookstores, the performing arts center and library), near CalTrain, the Light Rail, and Bus Depot, adjacent to Landels Elementary School, and close to the Stevens Creek Trail.
We're actively looking for others who share our vision of a supportive community, where neighbors know and care about each other, in a convenient, walkable location. Thirteen households have already committed to our project. Community members are committed to living in a friendly, inclusive, and mutually supportive community.
We have approval from the Mountain View City Council for a 19-unit condominium development plus a 4,000 sq ft shared common house. Units range in size from 1360 to 2050 sq ft, with target pricing of $750,000 to $1,250,000. The common house (4000+ sq ft) will have facilities for entertainment, exercise, group dining, crafts and a workshop. quarters
Buildings will be "green" and energy efficient, with universal design. Space is provided for guests and a shared caregiver, if needed eventually. Our community will emphasize outdoor space for an organic garden, orchard and flowers. Parking and storage will be relegated to underground areas with elevator access.
The project is being designed by members of our cohousing community via Design Workshops lead by award-winning architect Chuck Durrett (www.cohousingco.com). We are working with a local developer who will obtain entitlements, secure construction financing, and manage the building contractor. Construction should be completed by the fall of 2013.
