Cohousing Directory - Community View

The Pine Street Cohousing was formed during the summer of 1990 by a group of residents intending to develop a small community on a 5.3-acre site in Amherst, Massachusetts. Each of eight families has its own smaller-than-usual private house, as well as a share in a common house. The houses are clustered closely together to maximize the usefulness of the shared common house—a community space which effectively enlarges the living area of each house. To achieve this compactness, vehicles, parking, and roadway have been squeezed to the periphery. Pedestrian circulation predominates.
