Greenest Community in the Northeast

Location
Nubanusit Neighborhood & Farm is a beautiful and welcoming cohousing community in Peterborough, in the heart of southern New Hampshire's Monadnock region, just 90 minutes from Boston. Our neighborhood has 29 high-quality environmentally-designed homes, a spacious Common House, and professional office space in a renovated historic farmstead. We have 70+ acres along the Nubanusit River that include an organic farm, woodlands with walking trails, and a pond for swimming and skating. The center of town is only about a mile away along well-maintained sidewalks. Peterborough is an arts-friendly, thriving town made famous by Thornton Wilder's play, Our Town.

Community
Residents in our community range in age from 2 to 82 years old and currently include eleven children. Residents work in many fields including computer software and marketing, architecture, photography, natural science education, social work, psychology, environmental consulting, publishing, music, and health care non-profit. We work from home or commute to Manchester or Concord in New Hampshire and to Massachusetts.

Life at Nubanusit follows the rhythm of the seasons — planting and maple sugaring in the spring, harvesting, swimming, hiking, and boating in the summer and fall; skating, skiing, sledding and planning in the winter. We love to have parties and celebrations, many impromptu, and often centered on food, as we have some wonderful cooks, including a professional caterer. We participate in the wider community by hosting others in our Common House and sharing our harvest with the local community soup kitchen. Homes
A single-family home in our neighborhood has received LEED Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council; all of the buildings are constructed to the same rigorous environmental standards and use less than half the energy of typical houses. Our architect-designed, New England farmhouse-style homes all have front porches and are sided with traditional cedar shingles. Each home is super insulated with triple-glazed windows, infrastructure for solar hot water collectors, and natural, nontoxic materials chosen for quality and durability. The entire neighborhood is heated by a central wood-pellet fired heat plant. Hardwood and tile floors are used throughout the homes; the interiors are light, airy, and spacious. First floors feature a kitchen and open-concept living/dining room with a full mudroom entry and half bath/laundry room. The second floors consist of a master bedroom (in some homes the master bedroom is on the first floor), full bath, and additional bedrooms. Private living spaces have views of woods, farm fields, the pond or the river. We are a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood, with vehicles limited to the parking area at the periphery. Our organic farm includes fields for pasture, hay, vegetables, and fruits. There is also at various times an apiary, cows, chickens, pigs, and horses.

Region
Peterborough is a quintessential New England town of 6,000 located in a nature-lover’s region of small mountains, fresh water ponds, rivers, and picturesque villages. Our town is a vibrant arts and cultural center and is home to the world-renowned MacDowell Colony, a century-old haven for composers, writers, visual artists, architects, and filmmakers. In our walkable downtown, stately 19th-century buildings make for an elegant streetscape lined with hip eateries, pubs, shops, and galleries. We are the business center for the region, with publishing, educational, manufacturing and service employers. Hiking, biking, swimming, skiing, and many other outdoor activities are right out the back door or minutes away. We have good public schools, and there are Waldorf and other private daycare, preschool, elementary, and high schools in the area. If you are a political junkie, New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary will give you direct access to every Presidential candidate from early-to-late in the election cycle.

We have a limited number of brand-new single-family homes and 2- or 3-bedroom duplexes available.
