Welcome to Shepherd Village – a cohousing community now being developed within a charming, historic university town surrounded by natural beauty. Shepherdstown is a walkable town, and our Village on 19 wooded acres is an easy walk to unique shops, restaurants to fit every palate, and a thriving community of artists and musicians with events offered almost every evening. Walk to Shepherd University to enjoy its Life-long Learning program, classes, a state-of-the-art Wellness Center, and the nationally acclaimed Contemporary American Theatre Festival. And right outside our doors is the Great Outdoors – with the Potomac River just down the hill, the C&O Canal towpath for biking and walking nearby, and access to the Appalachian Trail. History buff? You’re minutes from Harper’s Ferry, Antietam Battlefield and many others, even Revolutionary war sites.
We are within commuting distance (90 min.) of Washington, DC, and Baltimore, MD. Bethesda, MD, and Northern Virginia are even closer. A commuter train is just five miles away.
When completed, Shepherd Village will have …
• 30 private homes
— one, two or three bedrooms or an in-home office
— second floor lofts and walk-out basements, where available
— configured as duplexes and triplexes
• 4000 sq. ft. Common House
— gourmet kitchen and community dining
— guest rooms
— music/media room
— meditation/yoga room
— and more …
With space for lots of group activities in our Common House, it’s also a place to “just hang out” on a deck, a screened-in porch, or around an interior hearth/fireplace in comfort. Of course, discussions can lead to activities, like coffee at one of many coffee shops, kayaking, biking and hiking, live music at one of many venues, and enjoying the annual American Conservation Film Festival, to name a few.
A few features of our Village are …
• walking paths and small ponds
• large community garden
• shared amenities: bike shed, tool shed, woodworking shop, kayak storage
• clustered parking – electric plug-ins – pedestrian friendly
• solar-ready hookups
• earth-friendly building materials
• energy-saving design and use
• universal design for homes and Common House
This community now taking shape began as a “pipedream” many years ago when several friends in an intentional community working for social justice thought it would be great to one day move out of the city and live close to the land: an “Urban Tribe with a Rural Vision.” It was just an idea until this acreage was purchased in 2013. As of December 2016, we have completed home and Common House architectural designs and plans, received town planning commission approval for engineering designs of homes, roads and storm water management systems, and sent our bid package to prospective builders. We anticipate a move-in date of 2018.
Now Shepherd Village is 20+ member households – singles and couples, straight and LGBTQ, working and retired, volunteers and activists. Our lives are full and rich! We all value community and diversity, share our various skills and interests, and offer mutual support to each other. Environmental sustainability is one of our Values, and together we are creating simple and beautiful housing that honors the earth and preserves open space.
