Haystack Heights is an urban infill cohousing development that had the extraordinary good fortune to acquire 3 acres in the Perry District of Spokane, an emerging mid-size city located in the beautiful foothills of the Rocky Mountains. With countless hiking trails, downhill and cross-country skiing, river rafting and dozens of lakes nearby, Spokane is a mecca for premium outdoor recreation. Spokane hosts numerous festivals; Art fest, Hoop fest (largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament in the world), the Lilac Festival, Bloomsday run, a 2-day folk festival and weekly concerts in the parks during the summer. High tech firms from Seattle are establishing secondary campuses in Spokane due to our high quality of life, convenient international airport(GEG) with direct links to major cities and reasonable real estate prices. Our neighborhood is within walking/biking distance from downtown, the largest medical complex between Seattle and Minneapolis, a new medical school and the growing University District. Our site has an amazing ¾ acre established organic garden. Most are stunned that this secluded oasis is in the middle of the city! In addition to vegetables, the garden features a fully mature orchard with conventional and exotic fruits, and a bountiful variety of heirloom berries and grapes. The garden also has a terraced flower garden, two stone arches and other beautiful architectural features. We also have members skilled in food preservation and urban gardening ready to share their expertise with the rest of our community. Many have been sold on the community just because of the garden. All of the above and a view of Mt. Spokane.
We are committed to building a diverse inter-generational community by reserving 8 memberships for families with children/child under 12 years old until September 2018. We will have 1, 2, and 3+ bedroom units available as flats and townhouses. Homes have been designed based on member input working with Charles Durrett of McCamant and Durrett Architects, a firm that specializes in designing cohousing communities. Each home provides independent living, but you will want to spend time in our common house. This shared space will have a large chef’s kitchen with a dining room/party space, lounge, kids play room, guest rooms and laundry for the community to share. We also have two heritage buildings on the site and a vintage carriage house where we will create a workshop, teen space or music room, and equipment storage.
While all the buildings need some work, we will have these amenities for a small fraction of what it would cost to build new buildings of similar size and utility using the DIY skills of our members. All of these building are excellent opportunities for sweat equity and we intend to fully utilize them.
