Subscribe Page

The text at the top says that this is where you subscribe to the monthly magazine (by implication only that.. Then the mag subscription is only one of 15 choices, and it is the seventh one down in a visually very crowded field. I'd like to propose a different set of choices here that would get us as much information about the person's choices, but would be easier to manage, and clearer about what it means to check of any one of those boxes. Is there a limit to how lengthy the "labels" for these check boxes can be? And if so, what is it?

Hey Joani,

Sadly we have limited control over the display there. The field limit is pretty short (not much longer than what we have) and the decision on the list of groups was made after much agonization. Talk to Donna and JP and Craig about it?

I agree with you both...

We really wanted to do better than we are now and what is there is a compromise... a good-enough way to deal with the various constraints for now. My current thinking, as far as our priorities, is to get the website portion of our problem as good as possible first, and then to shift more attention to the databasing... in other words, lets move from Good to Great with what people see when they casually visit us and then move from OK to Good on collecting and working with the data.

Okay.....there still should

Okay.....there still should be fewer choices, the magazine should be first on the list, and the text at the top of the page should say that below you can check off what you want to receive not just that this is about subscribing to the magazine. May I take a crack at rewriting that paragraph and suggest some different choices--without exceeding character limits? When you answer me, could you cc your response to joani [at] cohousing [dot] org, (or joani [at] swansway [dot] com) so I won't have to keep checking this forum for responses to my comments. That'd be great!

Also, Craig. I hope that the opportunity to subscribe to our monthly email magazine IS what people see and want to do the very first time they visit our site. So maybe that should be on a separate page, and on that page we could give them the option to go to another page or make it another section lower down on that page to express all their other preferences/wishes.

Captcha problem, breadcrumb

First, tremendous kudos to all who contributed and continue to work on this web site revision. I gave a cheer on my first visit to the beta and seeing some subtle signs of Drupal, and reading your Beta page confirmed this. I salute your choice of CMS and your commitment to open source technology, which has strong resonance with the cohousing mentality!

Two attempts that I made to subscribe were not successful and this seems to be related to the Captcha tool being used at the bottom of the page. I was certain that I had accurately transcribed the text string, and had another person double-check, but no luck. A second, fresh visit to the page generated the same text string, something that should happen. Perhaps this module needs a look? I'll revisit in a day or so and try subscribing again.

On the same subscribe page, the breadcrumb trail at the top includes a link to CivicCRM which, when clicked, throws an access denied error, which is probably appropriate. You may wish to have your web developer check through the breadcrumbs and find way to omit this link, as it will probably lead to end user confusion over time. This is just a minor housekeeping detail, but still a part of presenting the Cohousing.org site at its best. Applause to all of you!

Thanks Greg!

Every time I think I have that captcha problem solved I hear about it again - very frustrating! I'll have our developer look at it, since obviously I'm not getting anywhere!

I'll take a look and see what I can do with the breadcrumbs - thanks!

If you still have trouble subscribing tomorrow, feel free to email me your information and I'll take care of it for you.

Subscribed successfully, and

Subscribed successfully, and got a fresh Captcha string after a couple page refreshes - that's curious. Nevertheless, all's well and thanks for the follow-up!
