2011 Conference: Save the Date!
Washington, DC - June 15-19
Come to learn, to share and perhaps to volunteer. The conference will feature cohousing and community experts – and is a great opportunity to network with dedicated cohousing activists, supporters and residents from around the world.
Presentations and workshops will address everything from the basics of cohousing, designing and building communities, living in community as well as addressing how we can contribute to making Cohousing more widespread, more sustainable and more affordable.

The national cohousing conference is THE place to be for aspiring cohousers, cohousing residents, cohousing professionals, and community experts.
This year’s theme, Sustainability through Community, connects these two parallel movements. Coho U – two-day intensives June 16th -17th before the conference – will highlight the links between the two movements and will include a course on sustainability. During the main conference, all four featured speakers will explore sustainability and its relationship to community.
We’ll be walking the talk by making this conference more sustainable than ever before. We’ll provide non-disposable cups and use zero-waste plates and tableware. Our keynote speaker, Bill McKibben, will join us via video with live Q&A. And all of this will take place at the beautiful University of Colorado campus in Boulder, Colorado, a city renowned for its commitment to sustainability.
Conference highlights include:
- Coho U – In-depth, two-day intensive workshops will provide tools and information you can use as you build and grow your cohousing community. For the first time, researchers and writers will participate in a special workshop.
- Featured Speakers – Bill McKibben, Dave Wann, Charles Durrett, and Kathryn McCamant will energize us and help us think about the connections between sustainability and community.
- Community Tours – These rolling workshops will take you to 11 Colorado communities so that you can experience and learn about cohousing firsthand.
- Conference Sessions – More than 40 presentations - learn about sustaining community through cohousing.
- Fundraising Banquet – Featuring a live auction, the Saturday night event is the conference highlight, as everyone joins together to eat, network, play – and raise money for the cohousing movement.

2010 Call for Presenters
We welcome submissions from presenters to lead special breakout sessions as part of the 2010 National Cohousing Conference. This year’s conference theme – Sustainability through Community – highlights conscious collaboration as a key to joyfully making the transition required by global climate change. As a community-design process and especially as a way of living, cohousing is home to a unique set of skills and traits that support collective growth and cultural advancement. We want to advance those skills, and bring them outside cohousing circles to create social change.
Cohousing is a nexus for progressive movements. This year’s conference will widen the circle around the cohousing movement and bring together thought leaders of parallel movements to mutual benefit. People involved with cohousing and other aligned movements are invited to participate by both attending and presenting workshops.

2010 Coho U - Research and Writers Workshop
Wednesday, June 16, and Thursday, June 17
Led by Diane Margolis, Lisa Poley, and Dave Wann
Early research has begun to document the lessons learned from cohousing communities in addressing social, economic, and environmental sustainability at the neighborhood level. The intent of this two-day academic workshop is to bring together a diverse group of researchers, writers, and others who have an interest in studying and writing about the role that neighborhood-level community may play in the sustainability of human culture and our planet.
Working together, participants will:
- share information and ideas;
- present research;
- brainstorm research possibilities;
- collaborate with others in the field;
- meet people who are leaders in cohousing development, community building, and neighborhood design and who are also cohousing residents themselves.
2010 Coho U - Sustainability: Environmental + Economic + Cultural

This Coho U track will draw a wide circle around the concept of sustainability, bringing together experts from an array of disciplines for a two-day facilitated workshop, mixing presentations and interactive discussions. We will invite attendees to be active contributors in conversations with the experts and students of these topics. Each participant will have the opportunity to share information about his/her current efforts or experiences, with the ultimate goal of advancing all participants’ ideas and understanding.

Exhibit tables will be located in a central area near registration, the bookstore, and the coffee break area. Electrical outlets exist at the perimeter of the exhibit area; please bring extension cords if you require electricity. Table cover will not be provided.
To become an exhibitor, fill out this form by Friday, May 28, 2010. If space is still available, it may be possible to exhibit, but those missing this deadline will not appear in the program. Exhibit tables will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis – so register early!
