There are numerous variations on the basic model, and it pays to be clear about which one your group is using. Conflict can arise when group members have different understandings, definitions, and interpretations. In this session, Eris Weaver will review the basic consensus model, point out the places in which groups differ, and discuss how to craft a consensus agreement that is as unambiguous as possible.

How Good Is Good Enough? Sustaining Community with Consent Decisions
When making decisions in community, there seems to be tension between ensuring the participation of all members and getting things done. One approach that produces this balance is decision making by consent, an integral part of the Sociocratic Circle-Organization Method. Using consent, we shift our focus from pleasing everyone forever to finding “good enough” solutions everyone can live with for a specified time. When we practice community in this way, we discern much about ourselves, our neighbors, and our culture and process. Who knows? Along the way, we might just discover our good enough keeps getting better and better!

Fundraising Needs for Forming Groups
Substantial sums are needed to fund a cohousing community. Some of those funds need to come from your community, and depending on your community model and the type of relationship with your professionals, your community also may need to seek funds from other sources. The presenters will review many of the fundraising needs and possible strategies for raising those funds, particularly in the current financial environment. The presenters will also provide an overview of when the funds are needed.

In this session, you’ll learn how to put together a clear and convincing case for a moderate- and low-income housing plan, including development implementation measures with your community planning office and elected officials. In an environment with declining resources, workforce, housing, and prioritization of local leveraged financing have never mattered more. Resources and case studies will also be highlighted for you to begin work when you return to your own communities.

Affordable Cohousing Task Group
The Affordable Cohousing Task Group will share its findings about methods for incorporating affordable units into new and built communities. These strategies will be for both individuals as well as communities. The Task Group will share the Goals and Advocacy plan for the 2011 National Cohousing Conference that will take place in Washington, DC. Attendees will be invited to ask questions and volunteer to participate in the planning for the upcoming year.

The focus will be on how to get the best value out of your professional team and the community’s efforts.

Three residents of senior cohousing will discuss why they chose to age in this way. Each will share his or her unique story. Participants will find out what it takes to manage a senior cohousing community successfully and what the challenges are to keep these communities thriving as residents age together.
