Bay State Commons is a cohousing community currently growing in Malden, Massachusetts, an inner suburb of Boston. We have purchased land at 368 Pleasant Street, located 750 feet from the Malden Center subway station (a 20-minute ride to downtown Boston) and a short walk to groceries, restaurants, public parks, and schools. The Northern Strand Community Trail and Bike to the Sea pass nearby, and the Middlesex Fells (a 2,200-acre state park) is one mile away.
Working with our architects and consultants, we have designed an energy-efficient 30-unit building for the site. Malden has recently enacted a cohousing ordinance, helping projects like ours to take shape. We’ve now completed the permitting process and anticipate breaking ground later this fall, and moving into our new home by mid-2021.
Our community already includes 23 households — families, couples and single people, representing four generations and a wide variety of backgrounds and interests. We aim to create a cohousing community that fosters group cohesiveness and serendipitous social interaction among neighbors, growing in our capacity to support each other and keep us all growing. Ours will be an environmentally friendly home that reflects our commitment to sustainability and emphasizes beauty in both architecture and landscape. We value a balance between the private and the shared, with individually owned homes complemented by extensive common facilities and shared green space.
Now is a great time to get involved, as we seek the remaining households for our community and look forward to putting a shovel in the ground! Please see our website at www.baystatecommons.org or contact us at baystatecommons [at] gmail [dot] com to learn more.
