Built in 1840, this unique millkeeper’s house has been updated, expanded and modernized to offer the best of character, charm and modern convenience. The private driveway and large property overlooks the Esopus Creek waterfall, and is located within the Cantine’s Island Cohousing Community where owners share seven acres of nature, beach, woodland pathways, a boathouse, a huge workshop and storage building, and an organic garden!
The house for sale is the oldest (original to the property) in the community. It has six rooms, with an open living room, dining and kitchen floor plan. There is one bathroom on the main floor and three rooms/bedrooms upstairs. There is a finished lower level, decks overlooking the waterfall and the "rapids,” and a large private yard, creating beautiful indoor and outdoor possibilities.
The community has a lovely Common House where we socialize and share meals (3x per week when not under pandemic restrictions). The Common House boasts a professional kitchen, living room with lots of seating and a gas fireplace, a large dining room that seats 40, a laundry room and kids’ playroom. All these amenities are available to our homeowners and all were built since the 1990s.
An interested purchaser should intend that the house be their primary residence rather than a vacation home, and will be expected to contribute to the community fabric by participating in monthly meetings and groundswork days, committee work, sharing meals, and general neighborliness.
Please note: Cantine's Island is currently not listed in the cohousing.org directory, but a complete listing can be found on ic.org.
