Village Hearth: LGBTQ 55+ Cohousing in Durham, NC

General Information

Village Hearth Cohousing is the first 55+ cohousing community in the U.S. created by and for LGBT seniors and their allies. Located within the city limits just 15 minutes from vibrant downtown Durham, NC, you’ll find nearby coffee shops and restaurants, music, art, theatre, a bustling Farmers Market and a world-class performing arts center.

Village Hearth has 28 single-story homes with three floor plans and over 3000 square feet of shared space in the Common House and the workshop. Conceived with community and connecting in mind, multiple outdoor gathering areas are found throughout. The homes are clustered on about six of our 15 acres, and our active landscape team is following a master plan for our outdoor common spaces. The Common House boasts a gourmet kitchen and dining room to accommodate shared meals, meetings and events. Other shared spaces include a sitting room with large screen TV and game table, fitness and craft rooms, laundry, and a terrace equipped with a grilling corner with sink, umbrellaed tables, propane heaters and amazing sunsets. But, at Village Hearth, you’re buying more than just a condo; you’re buying into a caring community.

We are so grateful to have been in community during COVID; our distanced outdoor activities kept us connected, and we found the loveliest new neighbors on Zoom! We've now had our inaugural Taco Tuesday to kick off Pride month, so we're on our way to fully utilizing our beautiful Common House. Neighbors from across the country are now free to explore the more populated areas of Durham, and many are connecting to the larger community by volunteering for social justice or progressive political groups.

This home is owned by a current resident, but it has not yet been occupied due to a change in plans by the owner. The condo for sale is a light-filled, west-northwest facing, single-story one-bedroom one-bath cottage-style home with a covered porch. Upgrades to the home include engineered wood floors, granite countertops, kitchen appliances, ceiling fans, window treatments and easy landscaping. Interior photos here show how one neighbor decorated her home of the same size. The home includes two parking spaces with onsite access to an electric car charging station.
