Heartwood Cohousing: Planting New Roots Alongside Established Trees in Southwest Colorado

Imagine waking to the scent of Ponderosa pines, sunlight filtering through the trees, knowing a day of connection, shared purpose, and natural beauty awaits. This isn’t a distant dream; it’s the unfolding reality at Heartwood Cohousing, established in 2000 and nestled on 360 acres just outside Bayfield in scenic Southwest Colorado. Learn more and explore whether Heartwood Cohousing might be the right fit for you by joining one of our Virtual Tours which host every month on the 15th at 3pm Mountain Time. As our thriving community, now over two decades strong, cherishes the deep bonds and vibrant life we’ve built, we’re buzzing with excitement as we prepare to build 14 new homes and welcome new neighbors into Heartwood Phase 2 – deepening our roots on this incredible land and expanding our vision for a richer, multi-generational life lived in harmony with nature and each other.

Our Story: More Than Just Houses

Heartwood Cohousing began, like many cohousing communities, with a shared desire for something more – more connection, more sustainability, more genuine community. After years of dedicated effort by a determined group, that dream became reality in 2000 as the first families moved onto our stunning 360 acres. The vision was clear then, and remains true today: create a richer neighborhood life, where neighbors know each other well, respect and support one another, and where children could grow up surrounded by a vibrant, loving extended “village” family – the proverbial cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

We intentionally designed it as a pedestrian village, with cars parked on the periphery, fostering comfortable and safe pathways for connection. Phase 1 brought together a diverse group who transformed this beautiful plot into a thriving neighborhood of 24 homes. We built not just energy-efficient homes, but relationships forged over shared meals in our Common House, collaborative garden projects, trail building work parties, and spontaneous gatherings on porches as the sun sets over the nearby La Plata Mountains. It wasn’t without challenges – building a community from scratch and learning the art of consensus and living closely takes ongoing work and introspection – but as members often say, the richness of friendships and shared life has been the undeniable reward, far outweighing the costs.

Branching Out: The Vision for Phase 2

The success and warmth of Phase 1 naturally led to the question: “What’s next?” The answer felt clear – let’s share this incredible way of life on this blessed land with more people. Thus, the vision for Heartwood Phase 2 was born. It’s not just an expansion; it’s a thoughtful evolution, designed to integrate seamlessly with our established neighborhood while bringing fresh energy and perspectives.

Phase 2 consists of 14 thoughtfully designed, sustainable homes clustered to preserve open space and maximize connection, both to nature and to neighbors. We’re carrying forward the core principles that make Heartwood special:

  • Deep Connection to Nature: Situated on rolling Ponderosa Pine forest land with piñon, juniper, meadows, and irrigated pasture, Phase 2 residents will share the same direct access to our 7+ miles of private walking trails, abundant wildlife (deer, elk, eagles, foxes!), and the profound peace of our natural surroundings. The homes themselves are designed with large windows and outdoor spaces to blur the lines between indoors and out.
  • Sustainable Living: Building on our commitment in Phase 1 (where homes achieved high E-star ratings), Phase 2 homes will be Zero Energy Ready certified, which means lower energy use, smaller carbon footprint, healthier indoor air, wildfire resilience, and enhanced comfort. It’s about living lighter on the planet while enjoying comfort and lower utility bills. As one member put it, contributing to the “stewardship of this land for future generations.”
  • Multi-Generational Community: We cherish the richness that comes from having people of all ages and life stages – the “joy and fresh energies of children with the wisdom of elders, and everyone in between.” Phase 2 is designed to welcome young families, active retirees, singles, and couples – anyone seeking authentic connection and a supportive place to call home.
  • Shared Resources, Shared Life: Phase 2 residents will become integral members of the entire Heartwood community, fully sharing access to our beautiful Common House (with its large kitchen – home to shared activities like our member-led Fermentation Guild, Knitting for Peace group, and song circle – dining area, kids’ room, exercise room, and guest suites), community workshop, gardens, greenhouse, hot tub, pickleball/tennis court, and 7 miles of trails on 350 acres of open space.

What Does Life Feel Like Here?

It feels like borrowing a cup of sugar and staying for an hour-long chat. It feels like kids organizing impromptu games safely in the woods or on the pedestrian paths, knowing many trusted adults are looking out for them (“It takes a village”). It feels like collaborative problem-solving during community work parties, whether in the garden, greenhouse, pasture, or maintaining trails. It feels like shared dinners filled with laughter and stories multiple times a week (always optional, never required – opportunities, not obligations!), and the quiet comfort of your private home or a walk in the woods when you need solitude – that balance of community and privacy is essential here and readily available.

Members talk about the “ease of socializing,” spontaneous front porch gatherings, shared celebrations (even finding ways during COVID!), soaking in the hot tub under dark, starry skies, or simply “connecting with friends I know and love” while walking down the path. It’s the tangible support – bringing soup when a neighbor is sick, helping with childcare, pitching in to solve needs, sharing tools from the community workshop. It’s the joy of hitting the trails right outside your door after work for a run, bike ride, or ski, or harvesting greens from the shared greenhouse for breakfast. It’s knowing your neighbors and being known by them.

Building the Future, Together

Developing Phase 2 is an active process, and future residents have the unique opportunity to join now and help shape the next chapter of Heartwood. It’s a chance to be part of building something meaningful, forging bonds with future neighbors before the homes are even completed.

We’re seeking individuals and families who resonate with our values of community, sustainability, and respect for nature. People who are excited by the prospect of contributing their unique skills, talents, passions, knowledge, and life experiences (recognizing the “wealth of knowledge pooled among neighbors”), who are ready to participate, and who believe, as we do, that living collaboratively leads to a richer, more fulfilling life.

Come See for Yourself

Southwest Colorado offers unparalleled access to outdoor adventure – skiing, hiking, biking, river rafting in the nearby San Juan Mountains and red rock canyons – combined with the charm of nearby towns like Bayfield (less than 5 minutes away) and the cultural hub of Durango (about 25 minutes). Heartwood offers a sanctuary within that incredible landscape – a place to truly belong, where many members successfully blend remote work with a fulfilling rural lifestyle thanks to good connectivity.

If you feel a stirring of curiosity, a sense of “these might be my people,” we encourage you to explore further. Learn more about Phase 2 here, and perhaps even attend a Virtual Tour. We believe we’re creating something truly special here, grounded in over two decades of experience and ready for new growth, and we look forward to welcoming the new faces who will help Heartwood continue to blossom.
