Cohousing is about more than architecture and consensus. At its core, cohousing is a lifestyle choice the promotes connection, community, sharing and togetherness.
Cohousing culture is additive. In cohousing the individual is valued along with and as part of the larger group. We understand that the group can gain without taking away from the individual. Sharing is valued alongside private space, realizing that more shared space means less need for private space, even as we value our private homes and independence. Because we live within a broader culture defined by individual needs and privacy, we tend to talk mostly about the abundance of sharing and the joy of being integrally connected to a community. We know that the shift in culture can be challenging and requires us to learn new skills for relating to each other, skills that we then carry with us everywhere we go making all our communities stronger. rnrnWe express our culture in everyday activities and over time they become a way of life that feels so natural we may even forget that it is unusual in our country.
