Sharing is a central idea of cohousing and one of the ways we reduce our use of resources and build connections with our neighbors, usually at the same time. In the culture of cohousing,it is understood that reducing our individual ownership of material things and investing both time and treasure into the common good makes us richer in the ways that matter: relationships, health & environment.

Informal sharing is rampant in cohousing. Every cohousing community has ways of borrowing & lending & transferring things from a person who no longer needs them to someone who does.

These exchanges may be arranged on email or over dinner. They generally require little organization and manage themselves, though most communities do have a program or tradition around how unwanted items are offered to others.

The informal nature of this sharing does not in any way limit its value. Many deep conversations have happened when one neighbor dropped by to return a borrowed item and stayed for an hour of unplanned conversation.

Column 2

In contrast, lots of organization and management (and plenty of conflict resolution as well) go into managing the formal sharing of resources like the common house and other common property.

While we arrive in cohousing believing that sharing makes sense, that doesn’t mean our lives in the broader culture have taught us how to do that well.

Fortunately cohousers have been experimenting with systems for managing shared resources for decades and are happy to share what they have learned.

Whether you are a new community just getting set up or a community that is looking to revamp a system that isn’t working, the pages in this section will give you many ideas and perspectives on how to share resources peacefully and joyously.

Row 2
  • The core of cohousing is living in relationship.
  • Being connected benefits all of us.
  • We cultivate a culture of sharing and caring.
  • Site layout, size and architectural features promote frequent interaction and close relationships.
  • Most communities find 20-40 units is about the right size to know each other well.
    • Human impact on our planet is a common concern in cohousing and care for our environment is a core value.
    • Living in community, sharing resources and designing for lower energy use and greener living all help us reduce our impact on the environment.
    • We live in private homes with all the amenities we are used to, including kitchens.
    • Our homes are designed to look out to community and to have private spaces out of view.
    • Connecting with community is easy and natural, but not required or constant. Privacy matters too.
