Rachel Carson EcoVillage is the country’s first independent cohousing community on a university campus, the Eden Hall Campus of Chatham University’s Falk School of Sustainability and Environment. Located in Gibsonia, PA (just 20 miles north of Pittsburgh), the 35 unit community offers a range of homes, from studios to family-size units, along with a common house. The homes are sold at cost with pricing from $215,000-$545,000. Construction will be complete early in 2024.
We are a multi-generational community on a 388 acre campus dedicated to learning and practicing sustainability. In addition to its academic programs, the campus offers six miles of forest trails, a restaurant and café, a community amphitheater, an organic farm, shuttle bus service to the city, and more.
The Rachel Carson EcoVillage is a caring and cooperative community with sociocratic governance. In our development and planning, we are becoming a positive part of our local environment, both human and natural. Our buildings and site are designed to connect us to nature and to each other. The EcoVillage will offer easy connections with neighbors without sacrificing the privacy of our own home and yard.
The entire development will be certified by the Passive House Institute US, which means that our utility bills will be reduced to a fraction of their typical cost. Our materials have been selected for long-term durability and affordability as well as improved air quality. Our natural site infrastructure aims to improve the quality of the soil and water and foster a healthy human-inhabited ecosystem.
We already have commitments on 2/3 of the units with construction underway this summer. We welcome interested inquirers. See our website for more information: http://www.rachelcarsonecovillage.org or send us a question at rachelcarsonecovillage@gmail.com
