Description:
Rachel Carson EcoVillage is a multi-generational community dedicated to learning and practicing sustainability. Located adjacent to La Roche University in McCandless Township, (just 11 miles north of Pittsburgh) we are southwestern Pennsylvania’s first cohousing community.
Register for one of our virtual Introductory Sessions by emailing RCEintro@gmail.com or texting 412-573-1927
Our 35 unit community offers a range of homes, from studios to family-size units, along with a common house. The homes will be sold at cost with pricing from approximately $260,000-$640,000. Construction will be complete in early 2026. Rachel Carson EcoVillage is working in partnership with the Sisters of Divine Providence to nestle the ecovillage in an 8 acre woodland behind the Commons at Providence Heights.
In addition to La Roche University, the ecovillage is located within walking distance of a grocery store, book store, restaurants, movie theater, hospitals and public transportation. The local public school district (the largest suburban district in Allegheny County) offers a wide array of outstanding educational programs and is recognized for academic excellence. It’s an easy commute to downtown Pittsburgh, one of America’s most livable cities, with world class arts, music, entertainment, universities, medical facilities and a booming hi-tech hub.
Rachel Carson EcoVillage is a caring and cooperative community with sociocratic governance. In our development and planning, we are becoming a positive part of our local environment, both human and natural. Our buildings and site are designed to connect us to nature and to each other. The EcoVillage will offer easy connections with neighbors without sacrificing the privacy of our own home and yard.
The entire development will be certified by the Passive House Institute US, which means that our utility bills will be reduced to a fraction of their typical cost. Our materials have been selected for long-term durability and affordability as well as improved air quality. Our natural site infrastructure aims to improve the quality of the soil and water and foster a healthy human-inhabited ecosystem.
We already have commitments on 3/4 of the units and construction is underway. We welcome interested inquirers. See our website for more information: rachelcarsonecovillage.org
